Michael Jackson! An unusual combination of surreal talent, superstardom, controversies, Rumours, mysteries, hard-work and perfection. Some list where he is still the No.1 goes like “Greatest Musical Entertainers of All Time” “100 Greatest Artists”, “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time”, “The World’s Greatest Entertainer That Ever Lived” and so on…
People close to me know that MJ is my Demi-God and inspiration. I have always been in complete awe with his moves, performance, style, Moonwalk, songs, even if he is standing still during his performance there is something magically about it. 29th August is his 58th birth anniversary some english music channels and radio shows will be remembering the legendary superstar.
So i was wondering what was MJ’s contribution to the Ad world or how did the AD world utilised his talent when he was around or post his life time. I’m sure everyone knows the infamous Pepsi Ad which left MJ with third degree burns, what followed was the series of massive PR nightmare for the brand and the Film Director. This incident started his stint with plastic surgeries for his post accident treatment and he got carried away!
Let’s look at some of the ads he had done. Few best ones are post his Jackson 5 and thriller days. Pepsi being one brand which capitalised him completely during his success. All the ads actually look like a short version of his music videos or performance which captures the MJ frenzy. He was the right fit for the New Generation tag for pepsi
When i look back brands could have really done great stuff with him. Sony TV Kara Basso’s ad is an extension of the Black or white song and LA Gear Street tried creating some spectacular visuals and I’m sure back than it would have created lot of euphoria
Stumbled on this print ad where MJ is selling Mosquitoes repellent, this almost looks like the Gabbar singh (Amjad khan) selling parle-G biscuit ad. The body copy looks like an extension of the beat it song 🙂
The fan in me was expecting some great ads but I am disappointed. What I found was all spoofs or taking a dig at MJ using an impersonator, No brand is celebrating his uniqueness. His looks, his Nose, Black or white, plastic surgery are the only focus in these days. Pepsi however tried something with the MJ Bad album’s 25th anniversary and created some great product branding, I was fortunate to be part of that pitch with the Pepsi India team, it was my dream brief. We had few amazing ideas on digital but as the approvals come from the MJ family, most of the ideas did not fly…Sigh! Beat it!
It would be fun to re-visualize the current ads with MJ in it. Just for thought imagine MJ in the Dr. Dre beats ad or MJ as the Van Damme in the Volvo Ad or MJ as the mustafa from the old spice Ad! Ok this can be a separate blog post 🙂 Aaaaaoooooouuuu!!
